Melbourne Cup icon Michelle Payne has been immortalised with a bronze statue at Flemington racecourse.
Payne and the Victorian Racing Membership (VRC) unveiled the statue on Thursday, simply over a decade since she grew to become the primary lady to trip a horse to victory within the nation’s favorite turf race.
Payne steered $100 likelihood Prince Of Penzance to a surprising win within the 2015 Melbourne Cup.

Now she sits eternally alongside iconic coach Bart Cummings, fellow jockey Roy Higgins, and celebrity horses Phar Lap and Makybe Diva exterior the well-known racecourse.
“My life modified in 2015 after I gained the Melbourne Cup aboard Prince Of Penzance, and it has been probably the most wonderful journey since,” Payne mentioned on Thursday.
“To now have a statue right here at Flemington is actually extraordinary; it feels very surreal.
“As a younger woman, the Melbourne Cup was the race I dreamed of successful and realizing that dream got here true fills me with immense delight.

“My hope is that everybody who views this statue feels inspired to chase their desires and ambitions, irrespective of how massive they’re.”
Payne’s statue was designed by artist Judith Leman and funded by philanthropist Woman Marigold Southey AC.
“Michelle’s statue is designed to signify and honour her outstanding journey, her internal power now we have all come to respect, and the inspirational energy her Cup-winning trip has generated for greater than a decade,” Leman mentioned.

VRC chairman Neil Wilson mentioned Payne is as deserving as Cummings, Higgins, Phar Lap, and Makybe Diva in having a statue at Flemington.
“Michelle is an inspiration to numerous Australians, and a strong ambassador for feminine participation and the game of horse racing,” Wilson mentioned.
