MPs have voted to decriminalise abortion in England and Wales so that girls can’t be prosecuted for terminating their being pregnant at any stage.

The modification to the Crime and Policing Invoice handed by 379 votes to 137 on Tuesday night, in what’s thought to be the the largest shakeup to reproductive rights in nearly 60 years.

Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi, who tabled the modification, led the decision to decriminalise abortions that occur after 24 weeks, saying the present “Victorian” legal guidelines had been used towards susceptible girls.

Antoniazzi stated her modification “is a slender, focused measure” and won’t change how abortion companies are offered or the foundations beneath the 1967 Abortion Act.

As a difficulty of conscience, MPs have been allowed to vote in accordance with their private beliefs.
