A person has been charged with homicide over what police allege was a “mindless” and “random” stabbing assault on an 83-year-old man in a buying centre automobile park within the Hunter area of NSW.

A number of witnesses tried to save lots of the person, who police described as of “excellent character”, however he died with a number of stab wounds earlier than emergency companies arrived.

The alleged attacker despatched a number of faculties close to the buying strip in Charlestown in Lake Macquarie into lockdown amid a manhunt that lasted about three hours about 9.50am at the moment.

About 1pm, a 53-year-old man handed himself in to Newcastle police station, the place he was interviewed and later charged with homicide.

Detective Chief Inspector Scott Parker stated there was no indication the lads, each from the Lake Macquarie space, knew one another.

“It is clearly very tragic,” Parker stated this afternoon.

“The deceased man is a person of excellent character, and it appears a really random and mindless assault.”

He stated police had recovered a knife.

“Knife crime, it is clear it’s on the rise,” he stated.

“And clearly we’ll proceed our efforts to scale back the scourge of knife crime.”

The 53-year-old man was refused bail to face court docket tomorrow on expenses of homicide and assault.
