Keir Starmer has mentioned he regrets saying he was “delighted” that democracy activist Alaa Abd el-Fattah had returned to Britain after surprising social media posts resurfaced.

The PM expressed frustration that he had not been made conscious of “abhorrent” posts by the British-Egyptian twin nationwide, way back to 2010, when he appeared to name for violence towards Zionists and the police.

Mr El-Fattah, who was a key voice within the Arab Spring protests, arrived within the UK on Boxing Day after a journey ban was lifted following his launch from jail. Mr El-Fattah was granted UK citizenship in December 2021 beneath the-then PM Boris Johnson. (The posts) have been largely expressions of a younger man’s anger and frustrations in a time of regional crises (the wars on Iraq, on Lebanon and Gaza), and the rise of police brutality towards Egyptian youth.

“I notably remorse some that have been written as a part of on-line insult battles with the whole disregard for a way they learn to different individuals. I ought to have identified higher.”

Downing Road described the posts as “abhorrent” however mentioned his apology was “pretty fulsome”. Final week, the PM’s official spokesman mentioned: “We welcome the return of a British citizen unfairly detained overseas, as we’d in all instances and as we now have finished up to now.
